Chicago Genealogical Society Program: Preserving Your Family's Treasures

The Chicago Genealogical Society invites you to attend our first Saturday of the month program this Saturday, May 3rd. Our program will be Preserving Your Family's Treasures, with guest speaker Rena Schergen.

Ever wonder how to protect those family documents, photographs, news clippings, scrapbooks and heirlooms? Don't let them fall to pieces! Learn about the best archival practices that you can implement at home, including how to preserve and store your family's physical history.

Rena Schergen is an Archivist at the Archdiocese of St. Louis. She also has extensive archiving and preservation experience from her time at the National Archives, the Smithsonian and the Regenstein and Eckhart Libraries at the University of Chicago. Hailing from Chicago, she has been a member of CGS for 4 years and has through her own genealogical research, found that the Schergens came from Luxembourg and traveled to Muskegon, MI in 1878.

The program will be at the Newberry Library, 60 West Walton, Chicago, and begin at 1:30 p.m. The program is free. The Newberry does not have a visitor parking lot. However there is metered parking and garage parking available in the neighborhood. The following garage offers discounted parking to Newberry patrons. Remember to bring your parking ticket with you so it can be validated by the Newberry security guard. 100 West Chestnut Street: Enter on Clark Street; $8 (0-6 hours) and $9 (6-8 hours).
